Special x-rays include those to demonstrate the internal body organs and structures e.g. – stomach, bowel, kidneys, bladder.
It may be necessary to give intravenous contrast agents by injection (into a vein in the arm or hand) to show the kidneys and bladder. Your individual appointment letter will give you full details plus details of any special preparation beforehand. (e.g. no breakfast on the day of the examination). Please make sure you read your letter carefully and follow the instructions to avoid delays on the day.
Often it is necessary to administer a substance to visualise or show up the organs and structures on the x-ray film. This may be in the form of Barium sulphate compounds given by mouth to show the oesphagus, stomach, duodenum and small intestine or given rectally to show the large intestine or colon.
